Small but perfectly formed: A Sunday afternoon trip to Eastside Books is a welcome relief from the thronging crowds on Brick Lane market.
At the eye of the storm, it's light and modern enough to be in keeping with its location whilst supplying the necessary tranquillity of any good bookshop. Recently relocated from its previous home on Bethnal Green road, Eastside has a strong community feel with listings of local events and a local history section. Space is at a premium, but the shop nonetheless carries a wide range of literary fiction and a sprinkling of poetry. Some stock is pleasingly idiosyncratic, with a selection of old ordnance survey maps and local walks.
The children's corner contains multicultural children's books and comes complete with a plastic tea set; a threadbare armchair offers an inviting rest for the weary browser. A great addition to the boutiques, bars and curry houses of Brick Lane, Eastside Books has found its niche, pitching itself perfectly to its market.
