Dave Boling’s first novel, Guernica, was an international bestseller and winner of numerous awards, including the Richard and Judy Summer Reads and Waterstones New Voices of 2009. His second novel, set in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War, is The Undesirables. He is a career journalist and lives in Seattle, Wash.

Dave Boling knew he wanted to write a novel set against the backdrop of the Boer War. But it wasn't until he came across Emily Hobhouse's photograph of Lizzie van Zyl that he realised The Undesirables would focus on the suffering of the war's women and children rather than the battlefield.
